Who is Light Yagami?
Light Yagami is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series Death Note, created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. He is a brilliant but bored genius who finds the Death Note, a supernatural notebook that allows the user to kill anyone by knowing their name and face, after it is dropped by the Shinigami Ryuk. Frustrated by the status quo and unfairness of the world, Light uses the Death Note to kill those whom he deems morally unworthy of life, masterminding a worldwide massacre as the vigilante Kira.
Appearance and Personality
ight Yagami is a young man with light-brown hair and brown eyes. He is considered to be quite handsome, a trait noted by Misa Amane and Kiyomi Takada, among others. He usually dresses in a casual or formal style, depending on the occasion.
Light is characterized as hardworking, talented, and a natural genius. Highly perceptive and good with problem solving skills, Light is a skilled planner and good at mapping out scenarios. Furthermore, Light is very popular among peers and adored by his family members.
However, his high intelligence and constant praise from adults laid the foundation for an intense level of hubris which quickly took effect once he obtained the notebook. Even after being corrupted by the Death Note, Light continues to show a willingness to protect his family.
Light's main goal is to create a world free of crime and evil, over which he would rule and reign as a godlike figure. He believes that he is justice and that anyone who opposes him is evil. He is ruthless, manipulative, and cunning, willing to use anyone and anything to achieve his ends. He also develops a rivalry with L, the world's greatest detective who is determined to catch Kira.
History and Plot
Light Yagami was born on February 28, 1986 (or 1989 in the anime). He is portrayed as a teen genius and a model student with a polite, reserved, and gentleman-like personality, who is well-liked and popular among his peers and teachers and known for being the class topper.
One day, he finds the Death Note lying on the ground outside his school. Curious, he picks it up and reads the instructions inside. He initially dismisses it as a prank, but decides to test it out on a criminal he sees on TV. To his shock, the criminal dies of a heart attack within seconds.
Realizing that the Death Note is real, Light decides to use it to rid the world of criminals. He writes down the names of various criminals he sees on TV or online, killing them with heart attacks. His killings are eventually noticed by the public and the media, who dub him as Kira (derived from the Japanese pronunciation of \"killer\").
Light's actions also attract the attention of L, a mysterious detective who has solved many difficult cases around the world. L contacts the Japanese police and offers his assistance in catching Kira. He deduces that Kira is in Japan and that he needs a name and a face to kill.
L challenges Kira through a televised broadcast, using a decoy named Lind L. Tailor who claims to be L. Light falls for the trap and kills Tailor with the Death Note, revealing his location in the Kanto region of Japan. L then reveals himself as the real L and declares war on Kira.
Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game between Light and L, who try to outsmart each other while hiding their identities. Along the way, Light encounters other characters who either help or hinder his plans, such as Misa Amane (a second Kira who has a crush on him), Rem (a Shinigami who follows Misa), Ryuk (the Shinigami who dropped the Death Note), Soichiro Yagami (Light's father and head of the Japanese task force), Near (L's successor) and Mello (L's rival).
The series follows Light's attempts to create his ideal world while evading L's pursuit, as well as his moral dilemmas and psychological struggles as he becomes more corrupted by his power.
Fate
The fate of Light Yagami differs depending on the version of Death Note.
In the manga version, Light manages to kill L with the help of Rem, who sacrifices herself to save Misa. Light then takes over L's role as the head of the task force under the alias of L-Kira. He continues his killings for several years until he faces Near (L's successor) and Mello (L's rival) who team up to expose him.
In their final confrontation at an abandoned warehouse, Near reveals that he has replaced Light's Death Note with a fake one and that all of his accomplices have been captured or killed by Mello's actions. Light tries to escape but is shot by Matsuda (one of his former allies) who feels betrayed by him.
As Light lies wounded on the floor, Ryuk decides to write his name in his own Death Note, ending his life once and for all.
In the anime version, Light's fate is similar to that of the manga version except that he manages to escape from the warehouse after being shot by Matsuda. He runs away while bleeding profusely until he reaches an abandoned building where he collapses. There he sees an illusion of L standing over him before Ryuk writes his name in his own Death Note.
